Postgrad School of Business : 2012
26 DOWN TO BUSINESS COMMERCE As the Business school’s flagship ‘new directions’ degree, the MCom equips you with the knowledge, skills and generic competencies required to accelerate your career in a wide variety of business professions. Whether you have a background in business, or another field, including the arts, engineering or science, the MCom will help either fast-track your current career, or take it in an entirely new direction. The program offers considerable flexibility, with a choice of foundational business knowledge and discipline-specific areas of study within the business domain. After completing your foundation units, the program allows you to choose up to two areas of specialisation. The MCom is designed to meet the learning needs and career aspirations of three main types of students: – ‘career changers’, who have some professional work experience but wish to shift their career focus to commerce/business – ‘discipline changers’, who have limited or no professional work experience and wish to change to a different disciplinary focus to that of their undergraduate degree – ‘advanced learners’, graduates who are seeking to undertake deeper learning in the same disciplinary field as their bachelor’s degree. For students new to business studies, the program provides the necessary combination of breadth and depth. Those already on a professional pathway will find that the program offers part- time friendly classes that support an all-important life/work/study balance. Whatever your goals, the flexible Master of Commerce program (MCom) will advance your career in virtually any field. In addition, a ‘capstone’ unit, taken in the final semester of study provides an integrated and applied learning experience. The capstone unit is designed to consolidate your learning and promote your capacity to apply your knowledge and skills to real-world business problems. Students achieving an average of 75% or better in their first four units of study can apply for selection to undertake a commerce internship within their area(s) of specialisation. Admission to the internship unit is competitive and subject to availability of suitable placements. The learning and teaching offered in the MCom is research-enriched and built upon the clear advantages that flow from direct engagement with academic experts and peers in the classroom context. Whatever your background, this program will accelerate your career development and advancement in your chosen business profession.
